Alright, so today I wanted to talk about something I’ve bumped into more times than I’d like in my years of actually doing stuff, not just talking about it. The title I jotted down for myself was “spurs and wizards.” Sounds a bit like a fantasy novel, eh? But trust me, it’s very real in the trenches of projects, and rarely magical in a good way. It’s about the folks and the setups that just grind you down.
The “Spurs” in the Room
First, let’s talk about the “spurs.” These aren’t the cool kind cowboys wear. Nope. In my world, the spurs are the people or the pressures that are constantly jabbing you. Always pushing, always demanding. They usually have a few distinct flavors:
- “Now, now, now!” Everything was due yesterday. They don’t really care about how, just when. And when is always sooner than possible.
- “Promise anything!” These are often sales folks or execs who’ll sell the dream, features that don’t exist, timelines pulled out of thin air. Then it’s your problem to make their wild promises come true.
- “Just get it done!” They’re not interested in quality, or tech debt, or if the solution is held together with duct tape and prayers. Just mark it as “shipped.”
I remember this one place, we had a manager, let’s call him “Mr. Jitters.” Every morning, he’d be at your desk, eyes twitching, “Update? Progress? Are we on track for that impossible deadline I set?” He was the embodiment of a spur, constantly poking, making everyone anxious. Didn’t help get things done faster, just made everyone miserable and prone to cutting corners. We ended up shipping a product that was so buggy, we spent the next six months just fixing it, all while Mr. Jitters was already spurring us on to the next “big thing.” Classic.
Enter the “Wizards”
Then you’ve got the “wizards.” Oh, the wizards. These are the supposed geniuses, the tech gurus, the ones who are meant to wave their magic wands and solve all the hard problems. They come in a few varieties too:
- The “It’s Too Complex For You” Type: They operate in a black box. Their code, their systems, it’s all super intricate, and they talk in a language only they understand. Good luck trying to integrate or debug their stuff.
- The “Reinvent the Wheel” Type: Why use a standard solution when you can spend months building your own, more “elegant” (read: over-engineered) version? These wizards love to create bespoke magic that no one else can maintain.
- The “Perfect is the Enemy of Done” Type: They’ll spend ages polishing some tiny detail, seeking ultimate perfection, while the project grinds to a halt waiting for their “spell” to be complete.
We had this one architect, a true wizard in his own mind. He designed this whole new framework for us. It looked amazing on paper, full of fancy patterns and cutting-edge ideas. Problem was, actually using it was a nightmare. It took forever to get anything built, and when it broke, only he could fix it, and he was always “too busy” on his next grand design. We called his framework “The Labyrinth.” Easy to get lost in, very hard to get out.
When Spurs Poke Wizards (or rather, us in the middle)
Now, the real circus starts when the spurs are jabbing at you, demanding results, and your solution depends on something these wizards are brewing. That’s where I’ve seen projects go completely off the rails. You’re caught in a pincer movement of impossible demands and overly complex, often late, “magical” solutions.
I had this one project, still gives me shivers. The spurs on the business side had sold a massive client on a feature that was pure science fiction at the time. They’d been wowed by a demo from our R&D wizards, a demo that was, let’s say, “optimistically presented.” So, contract signed, crazy deadline set, and then it landed on our team’s lap to actually build and integrate this “wizardry” into our existing, creaking system. The spurs were on us daily, multiple times a day. “Is the magic working yet? The client is expecting a miracle!”
Meanwhile, the wizards were in their lab, occasionally giving us updates like, “We’ve had a breakthrough in quantum entanglement that might solve the data pipeline issue, but it needs more research.” Research! We were shipping in two months! We worked ourselves to the bone, trying to build bridges to their constantly shifting, half-baked “magic.” I remember one week I slept at the office three times. My diet was basically coffee and vending machine snacks. The stress was unbelievable. We were the ones facing the client’s anger, the spurs’ fury, all while trying to decipher the wizards’ cryptic pronouncements.
It all came crashing down, of course. The “magic” wasn’t ready, the integration was a mess, and the client was furious. Who took the heat? Not the spurs who overpromised. Not the wizards who underdelivered. Us. The folks in the middle. We were told we “lacked commitment” or “didn’t manage expectations.” It was a classic blame game, and we were the easy targets.

What did I learn from all this? Well, mostly I learned that companies run by spurs and relying on elusive wizards are basically human meat grinders. They chew people up and spit them out. It’s not about collaboration or building good stuff; it’s about impossible pressure and flashy, fragile solutions. I saw so many good people burn out and leave that place. Eventually, I got smart and did the same. Found a company that actually believed in realistic planning and solid engineering, not just shouting and hoping for magic. It’s not perfect, nowhere is, but at least I don’t dread Mondays anymore. And if I see that old pattern emerging – the aggressive spurs and the ivory-tower wizards – I know it’s time to be very, very careful, or just head for the door. Life’s too short for that kind of nonsense, you know?
