You know, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout this here Terlingua horse the other day. Now, I ain’t no expert on these fancy racehorses, but I’ve been around horses my whole life. This Terlingua, she was somethin’ special, they say. A real good runner, that one.

This Terlingua horse, she was born back in ’76, a long time ago. And she was a pretty one, too. Chestnut color, they called it. Kinda reddish-brown, like a shiny penny. Her daddy was a big-shot racehorse, won all them big races. Triple Crown winner, fancy title. They called him Secretariat, a real fast one. The Terlingua horse got her speed from him, I reckon.
They said this Terlingua horse was bought for a whole heap of money. More money than I’ve ever seen in my life! Two hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars! Can you imagine? For a young horse! But they knew she was gonna be a winner. And she was, too. Won a bunch of races, that Terlingua horse.
But you know, that’s not all about horses. You gotta know how to take care of them, too. It ain’t just about runnin’ fast. Horses need food, lots of it. Hay and grain, and fresh water all the time. You gotta clean up after them too. Lots of work, keepin’ a horse.
- Lots of food.
- Clean water.
- Big area to run.
And room, they need lots of room to run around. Can’t keep a horse cooped up in a little pen. They need to stretch their legs, run and play. Just like kids, almost. And you gotta be gentle with them, too. Horses, they got feelings, just like people. You gotta talk to ’em nice, and pet ’em, and brush their coats. Make ’em feel loved.
This Terlingua horse, she was a racehorse, so she probably got the best of everything. Fancy food, and the best doctors, and people to brush her coat every day. But even regular horses, they need good care. It ain’t right to just leave ’em out in a field and forget about ’em. They are relying on you, you know?

It is like a big dream for lots of folks, young and old, to have a horse. Terlingua horse, maybe not, but a horse of their own. It is a big job to have a horse. They need food, water, and a place to live. A horse needs a big area to live, run, and play. They need lots of care and love.
If you want a horse, you gotta know what you’re gettin’ into. It ain’t easy, takin’ care of a horse. But it can be good, too. If you love ’em, and take care of ’em right, they’ll love you back. Just like any other animal.
They say this Terlingua horse, she lived a good long life. Even after she stopped racin’, they took good care of her. Moved her to a big farm, with lots of green grass, and another horse to keep her company. That’s the way it should be.
The Terlingua horse had some babies, too. One of ’em was a girl horse, but she never did race. But that’s okay. Not all horses are meant to be racers, just like not all people are meant to be… well, whatever. Some horses are just meant to be loved, and that’s enough. The Terlingua horse’s babies were probably good horses, though. She came from good stock, as they say.
This Terlingua horse, she died back in 2008. That’s a long time ago, too. But people still talk about her. They remember her, ’cause she was special. A good runner, and a pretty horse, too. I reckon that’s what it is about horses, sometimes they are just famous. They are like the movie stars of the horse world. Terlingua horse was like a movie star.

If you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ a horse, you best do your research. Learn all about ’em. What they eat, how to take care of ’em, all that stuff. It is important, you know? There are books and stuff to read about horses. Or you can ask someone who knows, like a farmer, or a horse doctor. There are courses about horse behavior, too.
It is not all about speed and winning, although the Terlingua horse was good at that. It is about being good to the horse. It is about taking care of them. It is about love, really.
The Terlingua horse, she was a good one, they say. I wish I could have seen her run. But even if you don’t have a fancy racehorse like Terlingua, any horse can be special if you treat it right. Just remember that, and you’ll be alright. That Terlingua horse, she was something else. Yes, sir, she was somethin’ else.
