Well, let me tell you, I ain’t no expert on this basketball thing, but I’ve seen a few games in my time. And these fellas, these shooting guards, they sure can put that ball in the hoop. I heard folks talkin’ ’bout the top shooting guards of all time. So, I reckon I’ll tell ya what I heard.
First up, there’s this Jordan fella. Michael Jordan, they call him. Seems like everyone and their dog knows about him. Heard he was somethin’ special, that Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan, that name sure rings a bell, even for an old timer like me. Some folks say he’s the best that ever was. I heard he got 6, what they call, championships. Now that’s a lot of winning in the game.
- Michael Jordan: They say he scored 30 points. Every game. That’s a lot of baskets!
They say these shooting guards, their job is to get that ball in the net. They do it from far away, they do it from up close. Some of ’em are real good at jumpin’ up and throwin’ that ball, swish, nothin’ but net. I’ve seen it myself, even on that little TV we got. These shooting guards, they gotta be quick on their feet, like a cat chasin’ a mouse.
Another one I heard tell of is this Hal Greer fella. Hal Greer, now that name sounds familiar too. They say he played for some team up north, Syracuse somethin’ or other. Then they moved to Philadelphia. I remember that ’cause my cousin Earl used to live up near there. They say this Hal Greer played a whole heap of games. More than anybody back then, I reckon.
This Hal, he was somethin’ else. Played a lot of games. Scored a lot of points. They said at his time he is the best. Guess that’s why they talk about him so much. They say he could move like a weasel, slick and quick. These young folks today, they could learn a thing or two from that Hal Greer.
These shooting guards, they gotta be good at dribblin’ that ball, too. Bounce, bounce, bounce, all the way down the court. Then, whoosh, they throw it up and it goes right in. Makes it look easy, but I bet it ain’t. Takes a lot of practice, I reckon. Like tendin’ a garden, gotta put in the work to get the good stuff.
A shooting guard is important, like the rooster in the henhouse. They lead the way, get things goin’. They are good at catchin’, shootin’, movin’ their feet real good. And they gotta be smart, know when to pass and when to shoot. Just like knowin’ when to plant and when to harvest. It’s all about timing, you see.
Now, I heard there’s another one, fella named Kobe. Kobe Bryant. Now that’s a name you hear a lot too. He was good, real good. They say he is like that Jordan fella. Fast. Can jump real high. This Kobe Bryant, he could sure play. Heard he won a lot of games, too. Five championships, someone told me. That’s nearly as many as Jordan! Five is a lot of winning for these top shooting guards.
- Kobe Bryant: They say he played for the Lakers. That’s somewhere out west, I think.
Then there’s this other one, Clyde somethin’. Clyde Drexler. They call him “The Glide.” Sounds like he could just float through the air. Heard he was somethin’ to watch, too. These top shooting guards, they got all sorts of nicknames. Makes ’em sound like them wrestlers on TV.
This Clyde, he could dunk that ball somethin’ fierce. Just slam it right in there. And he was fast, too. Like a greased piglet at the county fair, hard to catch.

Now I heard ’bout another one, fella named Allen. Allen Iverson. He wasn’t the biggest fella, but they say he was tough. Like a little banty rooster, always scrappin’. This Allen Iverson, he could weave through them big fellas like a needle through cloth. He was a shooting guard, alright.
There is a lot of other names, like this fella called “Pete” and “Jerry”. They said they are good. And they played long time ago. They are good shooting guard. But that’s all I can remember now. It is hard to remember all these names.
So, there you have it. Just a few of them top shooting guards of all time. They may not be farmin’ or fixin’ fences, but they sure know how to work hard. And they sure can put that ball in the basket. It’s somethin’ to watch, I tell ya. Even an old lady like me can appreciate a good game of basketball. And these shooting guards, they’re the best of the best, I reckon. Or at least the top shooting guards of all time.
