So, I had this crazy idea a while back to head over to Bethpage State Park and check out the famous Black Course. You know, the one they always say is only for “highly skilled golfers”? Well, I’m no pro, but I do love a good challenge, and that sign just seemed to be calling my name.

First off, getting there was a bit of an adventure on its own. I’m not from Long Island, so navigating the roads and figuring out the parking situation was the first hurdle. But I managed! Once I got there, I walked straight to the first tee, and there it was – the legendary warning sign.
Let me tell you, seeing that sign in person, it’s a whole different feeling. It reads, “WARNING – The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers.” It’s like the course’s way of saying, “Hey, are you sure about this?”
- I stood there for a minute, taking it all in. People were walking by, some teeing off, others just looking at the sign like I was. I even saw a few folks turning back, probably deciding it wasn’t worth the potential embarrassment, haha.
But not me. I was there, and I was determined to see what this course was all about. I grabbed my clubs, took a deep breath, and stepped up to the tee. I won’t bore you with the details of every swing and putt, but let’s just say the Black Course lived up to its reputation.
It was tough!
It felt like every hole was designed to test you. I lost more balls than I care to admit, and my score? Let’s not even go there. But despite all that, it was an incredible experience. I mean, how many people can say they’ve played Bethpage Black, right?
By the end of it, I was exhausted, but also weirdly proud of myself. I’d faced the Black Course, and even though I didn’t conquer it, I didn’t let it defeat me either. And that sign? It’s not just a warning; it’s a badge of honor. If you’ve played Bethpage Black, you know what I’m talking about.

So, that’s my story of taking on the sign at Bethpage Black. It was a day of challenges, a few laughs, and a whole lot of respect for that golf course. Would I do it again? Probably not anytime soon, my ego needs time to recover. But hey, it’s a memory I’ll always have, and a pretty good story to tell, if I do say so myself.
