This here Winged Foot Golf Club, lemme tell ya, it’s somethin’ else. I heard folks talkin’ ’bout it down at the market, sayin’ it’s a real fancy place. Winged Foot Golf Club, they call it. Sounds like a bird takin’ flight, don’t it?

This Winged Foot Place, Real Tough
They say it’s one of them golf courses. Now, I ain’t never played golf myself. Too busy tendin’ to my garden and chickens, ya know? But I hear tell this Winged Foot Golf Club is a tough one. Real tough. Like tryin’ to thread a needle with these old shaky hands. They say the grass is cut real short, like a baby’s hair, and it makes the little white ball go real fast. Faster than a chicken runnin’ from a fox, I reckon.
And get this, they say this place, Winged Foot, got these little hills all over. Not like the gentle slopes we got out here in the fields. No sir. These hills, they call ’em “undulations,” are like a bumpy old wagon trail. Makes it hard to hit that little ball straight, I imagine. Like tryin’ to roll a marble across a washboard.
- Fast greens, like a greased piglet at the county fair
- Hills everywhere, like a gopher town
- Hard to play, like findin’ a needle in a haystack
18 Holes, They Say
Now, I hear most of these golf places got 18 holes. That’s a lot of walkin’, ain’t it? Like walkin’ from here to Johnson’s farm and back. Twice! They say each hole at Winged Foot Golf Club is different. Some long, some short, like a family with tall folks and short folks.
But this Winged Foot place, they got some that ain’t 18. Nine, they say. Or even 12 or 14! Imagine that! Like a hen layin’ different numbers of eggs each day. You just never know what you’re gonna get. They say some of these holes share parts, like neighbors sharin’ a fence line. It’s a whole different world, this golf thing.
Big Shots Playin’ at Winged Foot
I heard some big shots played at this Winged Foot Golf Club. Important folks, with fancy clothes and shiny shoes. They had a big to-do there back in ’74, I think it was. A real hootenanny. Folks came from all over, just to watch them hit that little ball around. They call it the U.S. Open, like it’s some kinda contest to see who’s the best at openin’ somethin’.

They say there’s this fella, a coach, who’s real good at teachin’ folks how to play this golf game. One of the best, they say. Like that old Mrs. Henderson who could teach any dog to sit and stay. Must take a lot of patience, teachin’ folks to hit a little ball just right. I reckon this coach fella got a lot of that.
He probably tells them all ’bout Winged Foot. How it’s fair, but tough. Like life, I suppose. You gotta work hard, but if you do it right, you get a good result. Kinda like growin’ tomatoes. You gotta water ’em, weed ’em, keep the bugs away, but come harvest time, you got yourself a juicy, red tomato.
Winged Foot Golf Club, a Fancy Place Indeed
So, this Winged Foot Golf Club, it’s somethin’ special, I guess. Not for me, mind you. I’m happy with my garden and my chickens. But for those folks who like that kinda thing, it sounds like a real challenge. Like tryin’ to catch a greased pig with one hand tied behind your back.
They got all sorts of stuff for learnin’ about this golf game. Books and such. Like them schoolbooks my grandkids bring home. Full of words I don’t understand, but they seem to get somethin’ out of ’em. I guess if you’re into that Winged Foot Golf Club, you gotta learn all about it. All the rules and such. Seems like a lot of fuss for a little white ball, if you ask me.
But hey, to each their own, right? Some folks like fishin’, some folks like quiltin’, and some folks like hittin’ a little white ball around a fancy place like Winged Foot Golf Club. As for me, I’ll stick to my garden. It might not be as fancy, but it’s a lot less frustratin’.

Well, I best be gettin’ back to my chores. Them chickens ain’t gonna feed themselves. But if you ever get a chance to see this Winged Foot place, you let me know what it’s like. I’m always curious ’bout things, even if they ain’t my cup of tea. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll take up golf. When pigs fly, maybe!
