Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them horse riders at Santa Anita, the ones they call jockeys. Don’t know why they gotta use fancy words, but that’s what they call ’em.

The Big Shots at Santa Anita
Now, Santa Anita, that’s a place where horses run real fast, and the jockeys, them little fellas on top, they gotta be tough. It ain’t easy, you know, ridin’ them big beasts. You gotta be strong and know what you’re doin’. It’s kinda like farmin’, but way faster and with more people watchin’. They got this big ol’ track, and them horses just zoom around it. Makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it.
The Champ, Juan Hernandez
Heard tell there’s this fella, Juan Hernandez, they say he’s the best. He’s won a whole heap of races. More than 2,400 times, they say! That’s a lot, even if you countin’ chickens. He’s like the king of the jockeys at Santa Anita. Folks call him a “superstar.” I guess that means he’s real good. He won a bunch of races last winter too, somethin’ like 63 of ‘em. That’s more races than I got teeth left, I tell ya! He just kept winnin’ and winnin’. Must be somethin’ special about him.
- Folks cheer for him real loud.
- He must make a lot of money.
- He probably eats good too.
More Than Just Ridin’ Horses

Now, ridin’ them horses ain’t all there is to it, see. They got these trainers too. They’re like the coaches, tellin’ the jockeys what to do and how to ride. And they gotta keep them horses healthy and happy. It’s a whole team effort, like gettin’ hay in the barn before it rains. Everybody’s gotta do their part.
Santa Anita, That Fancy Track
They say Santa Anita’s a real fancy track. They got news and pictures and all sorts of stuff on their website. Probably got more buttons than my old TV. They keep track of who wins and how fast they go. They call them “track records.” Sounds important, like keepin’ track of how many eggs the hens lay. They also got the names of the best trainers, them fellas I was tellin’ ya about. They say it’s a big deal, this Santa Anita place. People come from all over to watch the races, I hear.
Those Championships
And then there’s the championships. That’s when they decide who’s the very best, like pickin’ the biggest pumpkin at the county fair. They give out trophies and stuff. Ten championships they got, that’s a whole bunch. Must be a lot of ridin’ and winnin’ to get one of them trophies.

Jockeys Gotta Be Tough
These jockeys, they ain’t just sittin’ up there lookin’ pretty. It’s hard work. They gotta be strong and quick. And brave too. Them horses are powerful, and things can happen fast. It’s like wranglin’ a steer, but at high speed! They gotta make decisions in a split second, gotta know when to go fast and when to slow down. They gotta know their horse too, know what it can do and what it can’t. It’s more than just ridin’ around in circles, that’s for sure.
Keepin’ Up with the Races
Now, if you wanna know who’s winnin’ and who’s doin’ what, you can check the Santa Anita website. They got all the info there. Who won which race, how fast they went, all that stuff. It’s like readin’ the almanac, but for horse racin’. They even got pictures. It’s all there for you to see. But I don’t know why folks gotta spend so much time lookin’ at screens. Wouldn’t they rather be out in the sunshine?
So, that’s the deal with them jockeys at Santa Anita. They’re the fellas that ride them horses fast and try to win them races. Juan Hernandez, he’s the big shot, the one to beat. But there’s a whole bunch of ‘em, all tryin’ to be the best. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it. And them horses, well, they’re just beautiful creatures. It’s a sight to see, them runnin’ around that track. Even an old woman like me can appreciate that. Reminds me of when my ol’ Bessie used to run in the pasture, wild as the wind.
