Well, let’s talk about them Uruguay soccer fellas, the ones that play for the whole country. They call ’em the national team, you know, like the best of the best from all over.

The Big Team, La Celeste
They got this fancy name, “La Celeste,” which I guess means “the sky blue” in some language. Probably ’cause their shirts are that color, like a nice summer sky. These boys, they run around the field, kickin’ that ball, tryin’ to score more than the other team. It ain’t easy, I tell ya, lots of runnin’ and sweatin’.
The Players, Them Young and Old
Now, this team, it’s got all sorts of players. Young fellas just startin’ out, all full of energy, and older guys, been around the block a few times. They say some of these fellas are real famous, play for big clubs over in Europe. Hear tell of one fella, Luis Surez, a real go-getter, always chasin’ that ball, tryin’ to put it in the net. They say he’s a winger and a forward, whatever that means. Sounds like he runs a lot. Folks also talk about this Federico Valverde fella and that Ronald Araujo, and Jose Maria Gimenez. People say they are good players, real good.
- Some are good at stoppin’ the other team from scorin’, they call ’em defenders I think.
- Some are good at runnin’ with the ball and passin’ it around, they’re the midfield fellas.
- And then there’s the ones tryin’ to score, the forwards, like that Surez fella.
They got this goalie too, the one that tries to stop the ball from goin’ in the net. Heard tell of one named Fernando Muslera, been playin’ for a long time, lots of games under his belt. They say he is Uruguay’s all time most capped goalkeeper. And there was this other fella, Jose Nasazzi, from way back when, they say he was real good, led Uruguay to win some big game, the Olympics they call it, in 1924.

Lots of Games, Lots of Travelin’
These boys, they play a lot of games, all over the world sometimes. They got this big tournament comin’ up, the Copa America, in 2024. That’s a big deal, lots of countries playin’, tryin’ to be the best in South America. And there is that other big thing, the World Cup, but that’s not this year. That’s where all the countries play, even bigger than the Copa America.
Stats and Stuff, For the Smart Folks
Now, some folks like to keep track of all sorts of numbers, how many games they played, how many goals they scored, how old they are. They call ’em stats. I don’t pay much mind to that, I just like watchin’ ’em play. But I heard that Surez guy, he’s scored a whole lotta goals, more than anyone else on the team. They say he is Uruguay’s all time leading goal scorer. He has like 143 caps and 69 goals. My goodness, that’s a lot! Guess that means he’s pretty good, huh?
The Coach, The Boss Man

And of course, they got a coach, the fella tellin’ ’em what to do, makin’ sure they’re playin’ together like a team. Heard this fella Marcelo Bielsa is the coach now. Tough job, I reckon, gotta keep all them fellas in line. He’s got some assistants too, helpin’ him out.
The Best of the Best, The Legends
They say some of these players, they’re the best Uruguay’s ever had, real legends. Played for their country and for those big clubs in Europe. Folks remember ’em for years, tell stories about ’em. Guess that’s what happens when you’re good at somethin’, people remember you. It’s like that old mule of mine, Bess, she was the best mule I ever had. Always knew what to do, never complained. These soccer fellas, they’re kinda like Bess in a way, always givin’ it their all, tryin’ to be the best.
Fans, Rootin’ and Hollerin’
And then there’s the fans, the folks watchin’ the games, cheerin’ ’em on. They get real excited, yellin’ and screamin’, wearin’ the team colors. It’s quite a sight, I tell ya. Some folks even vote for their favorite players, sayin’ who they think is the best. This team has a lot of fans, all over the world I bet.

All the Info, if You Want It
Now, if you wanna know more about these fellas, you can find it all somewhere, I guess. Their age, where they’re from, all that stuff. They got websites and such, for folks who like to read all about it. Me? I just like watchin’ ’em play, seein’ that ball go in the net. That’s excitin’ enough for me.
So that’s the Uruguay national soccer team, bunch of fellas kickin’ a ball, tryin’ to make their country proud. Good for them, I say. Keeps ’em busy, outta trouble. And it gives us somethin’ to watch, somethin’ to cheer for. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.
