I was having a real tough time in a game the other day. My little fairy creature, supposed to be all magical and stuff, just kept getting knocked out. Super frustrating, you know? So, I thought, “Okay, what actually is fairy weak against?” Gotta figure this out if I want to win, so I decided to do a bit of my own looking into it.

My first thought actually went to old stories. I kind of remembered hearing bits and pieces about fairies and certain metals. So, I did a bit of digging, just casually looking around online and trying to recall things I might have read. And yeah, it turns out iron is like, a classic fairy-bane in a lot of folklore. People used to believe it could really hurt them, proper injuries that wouldn’t heal right if iron was the cause. Some tales even mention folks using iron chains to trap fairies or mess with their magic. Wild stuff when you think about it.
Then, shifting my brain back to games, I remembered this item I’d come across, a Fairy Feather. Its whole deal is to make fairy moves stronger. So, I figured, if there’s stuff to power ’em up, there has to be stuff that makes ’em weaker, right? It just stood to reason. That made me more determined to find out their specific weaknesses in the kind of games I play.
That got me focused on a particular game I was playing. I was using this Pokémon, Silvally, and had made it a Fairy-type, and it was just getting demolished by certain opponents. So, I went and looked up what really gives Fairy Silvally a hard time, specifically in something like Pokémon Go. The list I found was pretty clear about the top threats:
- Necrozma – Dusk Mane, that thing is a beast.
- Shadow Metagross, oof, hits like a truck.
- Zacian, but specifically the Crowned Sword version.
- And even Shadow Dialga.
Looking at those, a pattern started to jump out at me. A lot of those top counters are Steel types. I mean, Necrozma (Dusk Mane) is Psychic/Steel, Metagross is Steel/Psychic, Zacian (Crowned Sword) is Fairy/Steel, and Dialga is Steel/Dragon. So, Steel definitely seems to be a major problem for Fairies. And while I was at it, I saw that Poison types also came up a lot as being super effective against Fairy types in general across many games.
So, yeah, my little practice session of getting my butt kicked and then doing some homework definitely paid off. It’s interesting how that old folklore about iron kind of lines up with the Steel-type weakness in games. And Poison, well, that just makes a kind of thematic sense, doesn’t it? Nasty stuff versus delicate fairies. Definitely gotta remember that for my next battles. No more sending my fairies out to face a big ol’ steel monster without a better strategy!
