Well, let me tell ya ’bout this “la cara” thing. I don’t know what fancy folks call it, but to me, it’s just a face. Yeah, a face. Everybody’s got one, ain’t they? A face is important, real important.

Now, I ain’t no scholar or nothin’, but even I know you gotta look at a face to know a person. You see a smiling face, you think, “Oh, that person’s happy.” You see a sad face, you think, “That person’s got troubles.” It’s as plain as the nose on your… well, on your face! It’s how we figure out what’s goin’ on with folks. It’s how you know if someone is telling the truth or lying through their teeth, you can just see it in their face.
This “la cara,” this face, it tells a story. You look at an old person’s face, you see all the wrinkles and lines. Each one of them wrinkles, it’s a story. It’s a story about laughin’, cryin’, workin’ hard, and livin’ life. You can see the sun beatin’ down on their skin and the hard life they lived in their face. My old man, his face was like a roadmap, full of lines and bumps from working out in the fields all his life. You look at a young person’s face, it’s smooth and soft, like a baby’s bottom, ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Their story is just beginnin’. That’s what a face is, a story written on skin.
- Young faces are smooth
- Old faces tell stories
- Faces show emotions
And don’t even get me started on eyes! Them eyes, they’re the windows to the soul, that’s what they say. You can see a person’s kindness in their eyes, or you can see their mean streak. You ever look someone in the eye and just know they ain’t right? That’s the eyes talkin’, tellin’ you the truth. Sometimes, a face can fool ya, but them eyes, they rarely lie. I always told my kids, look a person in the eye when you talk to them, you can tell a lot from just looking someone in the eye, you can see their true heart.
Now, some folks are born with pretty faces, and some ain’t. But that don’t matter none. A pretty face might get you noticed, but it ain’t what makes a person good or bad. It’s what’s inside that counts, what’s in their heart. You know, some of the best people I know ain’t what you’d call pretty, but they got hearts of gold. And some of the prettiest faces hide the meanest souls. Beauty is only skin deep, like they say, it’s what’s inside that really matters.
And speakin’ of pretty faces, all these young girls these days, they’re always tryin’ to change their faces. Paintin’ ’em up like clowns, pokin’ ’em with needles, cuttin’ ’em up with knives. I don’t get it. Why would you wanna mess with the face God gave ya? Your face is your face, it’s who you are. It’s like tryin’ to change your fingerprints, can’t be done, and you shouldn’t even try. Embrace what you were given, that’s what I say. It’s like trying to turn a pig into a racehorse. It ain’t natural, and it don’t make no sense.

And another thing, you gotta take care of your face. Wash it good, keep it outta the sun. You don’t wanna end up lookin’ like a dried-up prune before your time. Use some good soap and some moisturizer, that’s what I do. And drink plenty of water, that helps too. Keep your skin healthy, and your face will thank you for it. It’s the same as taking care of a good pair of boots, if you take care of them, they’ll last you a long time.
So, this “la cara,” this face, it’s more than just a bunch of skin and bones. It’s who you are, it’s your story, it’s your connection to the world. It’s how you show your feelings, how you connect with other people. It’s how you see the world, and how the world sees you. It’s important to remember that. Treat your face good, and it’ll treat you good in return. And don’t be tryin’ to be someone you ain’t. Your face is your face, and that’s somethin’ special. So go on out there and show the world that beautiful, honest face of yours, because that’s who you are. It’s a gift, cherish it, just like a good loaf of homemade bread.
It’s important to look people in the eye too, just remember that. That’s how you know if you can trust them. A handshake and a look in the eye, that’s how you do business, that’s how you make friends, that’s how you know if someone is good or bad. It’s as simple as that. That’s all I got to say about this “la cara” thing. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go feed the chickens.
