Alright folks, let me tell you about this little adventure I had – we’re calling it “two mile farm.” It’s less of a farm, more of a backyard experiment that kinda spiraled out of control, in a good way, y’know?

So, it all started with wanting fresh tomatoes. Store-bought ones just ain’t the same, right? I figured, how hard could it be? Famous last words, I know. I grabbed a couple of tomato seedlings from the local hardware store, dug a little patch in the yard – didn’t even bother testing the soil, rookie mistake number one – and plopped them in. Figured that was that.
Then, the weeds came. Man, did they come. It was like a jungle overnight. I spent a whole Saturday pulling them out, only for them to be back with reinforcements the next day. That’s when I realized this whole gardening thing was a bit more involved than I thought. I started hitting the books, watching YouTube videos – the whole nine yards.
Next up? Composting. All those weeds I pulled? Perfect composting material! I built a simple bin out of some scrap wood I had lying around. Started throwing in kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings – you name it. It smelled awful for a while, let me tell ya, but eventually, it turned into this beautiful, rich soil. That was a win.
Expanding the operation:
The tomatoes did okay, nothing spectacular, but they tasted a million times better than anything I could buy. That got me thinking… what else could I grow? I started small, adding some herbs – basil, rosemary, thyme – in pots on the patio. Then came the peppers, a couple of zucchini plants, even a row of carrots.

The zucchini were a monster. I swear, they doubled in size every day. I was giving them away to neighbors, friends, anyone who would take them. I was making zucchini bread, zucchini fritters, zucchini everything! I think I ate zucchini for a solid month. But hey, at least I had zucchini!
The chicken coop incident:
Then, things got really ambitious. My wife, bless her heart, suggested chickens. Fresh eggs, she said. Pest control, she said. What she didn’t say was how much work chickens are! I built a coop – a rickety, but functional, thing – and got three hens. They were cute, I’ll give them that. And the eggs were amazing. But those birds were messy. And loud. And they pooped everywhere.
One day, they escaped. Ran amok in the garden, ate half my tomatoes, and scratched up my zucchini plants. I spent the rest of the afternoon chasing them around the yard like a madman. That was a low point, I’m not gonna lie.
Learnings and rewards:

But even with the weeds, the zucchini overload, and the chicken coop chaos, “two mile farm” was worth it. I learned a ton about gardening, about composting, about dealing with chickens (sort of). I got fresh, healthy food that tasted amazing. And I got a connection to nature that I never had before.
It ain’t perfect, but it’s mine. I’m still learning, still experimenting, still making mistakes. But every year, it gets a little better.
And that’s the beauty of it, I guess. So get out there, get your hands dirty, and start your own “two mile farm.” You won’t regret it.
- Tip 1: Start small. Don’t try to do everything at once.
- Tip 2: Learn from your mistakes. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Tip 3: Enjoy the process. It’s not about perfection, it’s about the journey.
Happy gardening!
