So, I was scrolling online the other day, you know, jumping from one thing to another, and landed on some discussion about UFC fights. Got me thinking, who do people actually consider the worst referee in the octagon? It’s something you hear fans yell about during fights, but I wanted to see if there was any kind of consensus.

First thing I did was just basic searching. Typed in stuff like “worst ufc ref” or “ufc referee mistakes”. Nothing too fancy. Just wanted to see what names kept coming up.
Digging Through Opinions
Right away, a couple of names started appearing pretty much everywhere I looked. Forums, old articles, fan rants – you name it. The two big ones were Steve Mazzagatti and Mario Yamasaki. It wasn’t just random fan hate either, though there was plenty of that.
I actually stumbled across something interesting – looked like fighters themselves had been asked about this. Found some info suggesting that in one poll, Mazzagatti got a chunk of votes, maybe around 22 percent, but Yamasaki really took the cake with something like 32 percent of fighters supposedly voting him as the worst. When the fighters themselves are saying it that loud, you pay attention.
Why the Hate?
So why these guys? From what I gathered digging through discussions and watching old clips people linked (well, described, since I’m not putting links here), it usually boils down to a few things:
- Late Stoppages: This seemed to be Yamasaki’s biggest criticism. Fighters taking unnecessary damage because he didn’t step in soon enough. People pointed to specific fights where you just watch and think, “Man, stop the fight already!” It’s dangerous stuff.
- Early Stoppages: Less common, maybe, but still frustrating. A fighter thinks they’re still good to go and the ref waves it off. Kills the momentum and leaves everyone wondering “what if?”.
- Inconsistent Calls: Just generally not seeming to apply the rules the same way all the time. Letting things go in one fight, calling fouls for the same thing in another.
- Just… Bad Positioning? Sometimes refs just seem out of place, missing action or getting in the way. Mazzagatti caught some flak for this sometimes, I think.
It wasn’t all negative, though. While looking up the bad, I saw mentions of refs who are generally well-regarded. Like, Marc Goddard‘s name came up. People, including fighters, seem to think his way of handling things in the cage, his demeanor, helps him do a better job. So it shows that good reffing is definitely noticed too.

Anyway, after falling down that rabbit hole for a bit, it seems pretty clear. While calling someone the absolute “worst” is always gonna be debated, Mazzagatti and especially Yamasaki have definitely earned that reputation in the eyes of many fighters and fans. You see those clips of late stoppages, particularly with Yamasaki, and it’s kinda hard to argue against the criticism. Just glad someone else is making those calls and not me.
