Okay, let me tell you about my trip out to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail down in Muscle Shoals. Been meaning to get down there for a while, heard some things, you know? Finally carved out some time.

So, I packed up my clubs, threw ’em in the car. The drive wasn’t too bad, just kinda cruising, thinking about hitting some balls. Rolled into Muscle Shoals, found the place easy enough. It’s pretty impressive when you pull up, big clubhouse, looks well kept. You get that feeling, you know, this is a serious golf spot.
Went inside, got checked in. Staff were alright, pointed me where I needed to go. Didn’t waste much time hanging around the clubhouse, wanted to get out there. I decided I’d tackle the Fighting Joe course first. Heard it was the tougher one.
Hitting the Links – Fighting Joe
Got to the first tee. Man, this course has some teeth. It’s long. Seriously long from the tees I was playing. And the layout, it makes you think. You can’t just bomb it anywhere. Lots of water, bunkers placed just right to catch you if you’re not careful. I definitely found a few of those bunkers, let me tell you.
The conditions were pretty good. Greens rolled nice, fairways were decent. Some holes were real lookers, especially the ones along the Tennessee River. That big par 3, number 18 I think, right on the water? Yeah, that one gets your attention. Lost a ball there, naturally.
- Started off okay, couple of pars.
- Found trouble around the middle of the front nine. Water loves my golf balls.
- Back nine was a grind. Felt every bit of the yardage.
- Finished tired but, you know, satisfied I guess. It beat me up a bit.
The Vibe
It’s part of that whole RTJ Trail thing, so it feels kinda… structured? But out on the course, it’s just you and the holes. It’s a tough track, Fighting Joe is. Demands good shots. If you’re spraying it around, forget about it. You’ll be reaching for a new ball pretty often.

Overall thoughts? Yeah, it was a solid day of golf. Challenging for sure. Maybe bit more than I bargained for on some holes. But that’s the game, right? It’s a proper test. If you’re in the area and you like golf that makes you work for it, give Muscle Shoals a look. Just bring plenty of golf balls, especially for Fighting Joe. Didn’t get a chance to play Schoolmaster this time, maybe next trip. Felt like I’d had enough of a beating for one day.
