So, I finally got around to checking out the Ohio State University Golf Club. Heard folks talk about it, figured I’d give it a look myself, see what the fuss was about, or if there was any fuss at all.

Showing Up
Rolled up there on a weekday afternoon. Finding the place wasn’t hard, signs were clear enough once you got close to campus. Parking was right there, which was convenient. Didn’t have to walk a mile, thankfully. The first impression? It looked… like a university golf course. Big brick building, scarlet and gray hints here and there. Felt kinda formal, almost like walking into another campus building, not really a relaxed golf vibe right off the bat.
Getting Sorted
Walked into the pro shop. It was alright. Standard stuff – shirts, balls, the usual gear. The person behind the counter seemed busy, took a second to get helped. Wasn’t looking to play a full 18, just wanted to hit the driving range, maybe putt a little. Paid for a bucket of balls. Seemed a bit pricey for the number of balls, but hey, university place, maybe that’s expected. Got my token or code, whatever it was, and headed out back.
Hitting the Range and Greens
The driving range was pretty big. Lots of spots to hit from. Found an empty mat. Let me tell you, some of those mats have seen better days. Pretty worn down in the middle. But whatever, it’s a place to hit balls. Started swinging.
- The balls themselves? Range balls. Scuffed up, some better than others. Typical.
- The targets out on the range were okay. Flags, some yardage markers. Nothing fancy.
- Spent maybe an hour just hitting? Worked through the bucket. Some good shots, plenty of bad ones. The usual story for me.
After the range, I wandered over to the putting green. It was decent. Rolled pretty true, I guess. Spent about 15 minutes there, just getting a feel for the speed. Seemed well-kept, probably the nicest part I saw up close.
Final Thoughts
So, what’s the verdict? It was… okay. It’s a golf facility. It serves its function. Did it feel special? Not really. Felt a bit like just another part of the giant OSU operation. Everything was functional, but nothing really stood out as amazing or particularly welcoming. It lacked a certain character, maybe? Just felt very… institutional. The staff did their job, the grounds were maintained alright (except those range mats), but it wasn’t a place I left thinking “Wow, I gotta come back here ASAP.” It did the job for hitting some practice balls, but I’ve been to other local places that felt a bit more friendly or had a bit more charm. It is what it is, I suppose. A solid, if unremarkable, place to swing a club if you’re in the area.
