Okay, so today I decided to dive into the world of rugby sevens. I’ve always watched it, thought it looked cool, but never really understood the positions. So, I figured, why not learn them properly? That’s what I did today!

First, I jumped online, you know, the usual Google search. “Rugby 7 positions” – boom, tons of stuff. Started reading through some articles and watching some videos. It was a little overwhelming at first, all these names like “prop” and “scrum-half.” Seemed like another language!
Breaking It Down
I decided to take it slow, one position at a time. I started with the forwards because, well, they seemed like the big guys up front.
- Props (2): These are the strong, powerful players. Think of them like the anchors in the scrum. I visualized them pushing and battling for the ball.
- Hooker (1): This guy or gal is in the middle of the front row in the scrum. I learned that they’re super important for winning the ball back in the scrum.
Okay, forwards done! Felt pretty good, I was making progress.
Moving to the Backs
Then I moved on to the backs. These players seemed faster and more agile, the ones running around all over the place.
- Scrum-half (1): This person is like the link between the forwards and the backs. I figured out they need to be quick thinkers and good passers.
- Fly-half (1): The playmaker! This is the one calling the shots, deciding where the ball goes. I imagined them being super strategic.
- Center (1): Right in the middle of the action. I read that they need to be strong runners and good tacklers.
- Wing (1):The speedsters! these ones try to score.
After reading and watching for a while, I started to sketch out a little diagram on a piece of paper, just to help me remember. That really helped it stick in my brain. I kept going back and forth, comparing the positions, thinking about how they all work together on the field.

Finally, I felt like I had a decent grasp of it. It’s not like I’m an expert now, but I definitely understand the basics. It’s cool to see how each position has a specific role, and how they all need to work as a team. Now, when I watch a game, I can actually follow what’s going on a bit better! Mission accomplished, I guess!
