So, the other day I was just messing around online, kinda bored, clicking through random stuff. You know how it goes. And somehow, I ended up thinking about football in places you don’t hear about much on the big sports channels. My mind landed on Iraq. I realized I knew basically nothing about their local football scene, their clubs.

I figured, okay, let’s fix that. Fired up the search engine. My first try was just, like, “Iraq football clubs”. Got a lot of stuff about the national team, recent matches, political news mixed in. Not quite what I wanted. I needed the actual teams people support week in, week out.
Digging a Bit Deeper
So I refined my search. Tried things like “Iraqi Premier League teams” or “top football clubs Baghdad”. That started getting me somewhere. Names started popping up. It wasn’t super organized, mind you. Not like looking up the English leagues where everything is laid out perfectly. This felt more like piecing things together.
I started seeing a few names repeated quite often. That’s usually a good sign you’re finding the more established or historically significant clubs. I jotted down a few that kept appearing:
- Al-Zawraa
- Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya (Air Force Club, apparently)
- Al-Shorta (Police Club)
- Al-Talaba
- Erbil SC (from the Kurdish region, which seemed interesting)
Seeing names like Air Force Club and Police Club reminded me of how clubs sometimes get started or are linked to institutions. It happens elsewhere too, but it stood out to me here.
Getting a Feel for the Scene
Okay, so I had some names. But names are just names, right? I wanted to get a bit more of a feel. I started looking for pictures, fan stuff, maybe clips if I could find any without getting tangled in weird websites. It was tricky. Information is scattered. Sometimes you’d find an old club crest, sometimes a newer one. Match details weren’t always easy to track down consistently.

What I did gather, though, is that football is clearly a big deal there, just like anywhere else. Especially those Baghdad clubs – Al-Zawraa, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Shorta – seemed to have big followings and intense rivalries. That’s the heart of club football, isn’t it? The local passion.
I spent a good hour or so just clicking around, reading snippets here and there, looking at grainy photos of stadiums or team lineups. It wasn’t a structured research project, more like falling down a small rabbit hole out of curiosity. I didn’t become an expert overnight, obviously. But I went from knowing zero to at least recognizing some of the main players in Iraqi club football.
It was a good reminder that there’s a whole world of football out there beyond the leagues we see advertised constantly. Every place has its teams, its heroes, its history. You just gotta dig a little sometimes to find it.
