Okay, so today I got curious about something specific – the 1972 Masters leaderboard. It just popped into my head, and I wanted to see the results from back then.

First thing I did was just hop onto my computer and type something simple into a search engine. Probably started with “1972 Masters results” or something basic like that. You know, the usual first step.
Got a bunch of pages back, of course. Some were okay, giving the winner, which I kind of already knew was Jack Nicklaus, but finding the full leaderboard, like who came second, third, and down the line, wasn’t immediately obvious on the first couple of clicks. Lots of articles about the tournament, but not the straight-up list I wanted.
So, I had to dig a bit deeper. I tried changing my search terms. Added things like “full leaderboard 1972 Masters” and “1972 Masters final standings”. That seemed to help narrow it down a bit.
Eventually, I landed on a couple of sites that looked more promising. Seemed like dedicated golf history spots or sports stats archives. These usually have more detailed records than just news articles.
Finding the actual list
I clicked around on one of these archive-type sites. Took a little navigating, finding their section for past Masters tournaments, then selecting the year 1972.

And there it was. A proper list, showing the players and their scores. It wasn’t super fancy, just plain data, which was exactly what I was after.
- Winner: Jack Nicklaus, no surprise there.
- Runner-ups: Saw Bruce Crampton, Bobby Mitchell, and Tom Weiskopf were all tied for second. That was interesting to see.
- Other Scores: Could scroll down and see the scores for everyone who made the cut.
So yeah, took a little bit more searching than just a single query, but I got there. Just had to refine my search terms and look for those more specific historical sports data sites instead of general news results. Got the 1972 leaderboard logged down now.
