Okay so I found this weird file on my old backup drive the other day, it ended with .swm. Never seen that before. Tried double-clicking it obviously – nothing happened. Windows just stared at me like a confused cow.

The Stupid Simple Fix That Didn’t Work
First thing I did was Google “.swm file”. Big mistake. Got flooded with tech jargon soup – “split Windows images” and “shadow copies”. Yeah nah mate. Tried renaming it to .zip because everything’s a zip file these days right? Nope. Corrupted file error. Absolute rubbish.
My Dumb Toolkit Adventures
Dug out these ancient tools I hadn’t touched since Windows 7 days:
- Tried mounting it through Disk Management – error message gibberish
- Attempted opening with 7-Zip – saw some file fragments but couldn’t extract
- Found Microsoft’s DISM command line thingy – typed commands until my keyboard smoked
Meanwhile the file’s just sitting there laughing at me. Bloody thing cost me two nights’ sleep already.
The Neighbour’s Cousin Saves The Day
Then I remembered my neighbour’s cousin does IT support. Texted him pictures of the file while swearing about Microsoft. Turns out .swm files are like puzzle pieces – you need ALL the parts. Found three more .swm files buried in the backup folder! Slapped them together with this free tool he recommended.
Boom. Suddenly I’m looking at my grandma’s photo album from 2010 that I thought I’d lost forever. Nearly cried over pictures of her terrible poodle haircut.

What I Learned The Hard Way
- Backup files sometimes split themselves like crazy ants
- Microsoft makes simple things needlessly complicated
- Always text your neighbour’s nerdy cousin first
Moral of the story? If you see .swm files running wild on your drive – gather the whole gang before you try anything. Or just avoid Windows backups altogether frankly.
