This here story is about that Yu-Hsiang Chiu fella. Heard that name tossed around, sounds kinda like a dish we make back home, but this one’s a person, a young fella, seems like. Thirty years old, they say, born in 1994. Lord, that makes me feel old. I remember 1994 like it was yesterday, but for him, it was when he first opened his eyes in this world.

Now, this Chiu boy, he plays that tennis. You know, that game with the rackets and the little fuzzy balls. He ain’t the best, but he ain’t the worst neither. Some fella told me his highest rank in the singles was 974. Sounds like a lot of folks better than him, but hey, he’s out there doing it, ain’t he? And in doubles, whatever that is, he got to 638.
- He’s 30 years old.
- Born in 1994. I was already old by then.
- Plays that tennis game.
- Got some rank, 974 and 638.
Don’t know much else about this Yu-Hsiang Chiu. Just that he’s a tennis player. Heard some folks talkin’ ’bout his “profile” and “bio” and “stats”. Sounds like a bunch of fancy words for sayin’ how good he is at hittin’ that ball. They got all these numbers and things, trackin’ every little thing he does.
Someone said there ain’t no “upcoming matches” for him. Maybe he’s takin’ a break, or maybe he just ain’t good enough to be in the big leagues right now. It’s a tough world out there, I reckon, even in that tennis game. You gotta be real good to make a name for yourself.
Got me thinkin’ about that Yu Hsiang Chicken dish though. Now that’s something I know about. We used to make it all the time back on the farm. Spicy, sweet, sour, all mixed up together. Good stuff, that is. This Chiu fella’s name just got me hankerin’ for some good old-fashioned home cookin’.
They say this Yu Hsiang Chicken is from Sichuan. Don’t know where that is, but it sounds far away. They got all sorts of dishes over there, I hear. Spicy ones, mostly. Just like our Yu Hsiang Chicken. Makes your mouth water just thinkin’ about it.

This dish, it’s got a little bit of everything. Sugar, vinegar, maybe some other things I don’t even know about. But it all comes together real nice. You gotta have the right touch to make it right, though. Just like that tennis, I suppose. Gotta have the right touch to hit that ball just so.
Heard someone say something about Yu Hsiang Beef too. Never had that, but it sounds kinda similar. Beef instead of chicken, I guess. Still got that spicy, sweet, sour thing goin’ on. They say it’s a “classic” dish. Guess that means it’s been around for a while, just like me.
- Yu Hsiang Chicken, that’s a good dish.
- Spicy, sweet, and sour, all mixed up.
- From a place called Sichuan.
- They got Yu Hsiang Beef too, sounds tasty.
This Yu-Hsiang Chiu, the tennis player, well, I don’t know if he eats Yu Hsiang Chicken or Yu Hsiang Beef. Probably does, if he’s from around there. Or maybe he’s got a whole different kind of diet, being an athlete and all. They gotta eat special things to keep their bodies in tip-top shape, I reckon.
Anyway, that’s all I know about this Yu-Hsiang Chiu fella. Just a name I heard, reminded me of some good food. Maybe he’s a good tennis player, maybe he ain’t. But he’s out there doin’ it, and that’s somethin’, I suppose. Just like that Yu Hsiang Chicken, it’s somethin’ special, even if it ain’t for everyone. Hope this Yu-Hsiang Chiu fella find his way, just like that dish did.
Life is kinda like that dish, ain’t it? A little bit of sweet, a little bit of sour, some spice here and there. You gotta take the good with the bad, and just keep on going. Just like this Yu-Hsiang Chiu, and his tennis, and that delicious Yu Hsiang Chicken, it’s all just part of the big, old mix-up we call life.
