Alright, so I finally got myself over to Fairmount Golf Course the other day. I’ve been meaning to check it out for ages, you know? Driven past it a hundred times, heard bits and pieces from folks, some good, some not so much. So I thought, heck, let’s just go see what the fuss is all about.

Getting there was easy enough, no drama. Pulled in, and the first thing I noticed was it felt… well, like a proper local course. No fancy airs, which I actually appreciate. Sometimes these golf places can be a bit much, you know? This felt more like a spot for regular Joes just wanting to hit a ball around. The fella in the pro shop was friendly enough, got me sorted out pretty quick. Didn’t try to upsell me on a bunch of stuff I didn’t need, which was a good start.
So, what was it actually like out on the course?
Well, let me tell you, it wasn’t Pebble Beach, but it wasn’t a cow pasture either. The greens were in decent shape, a bit slow maybe, but they rolled true enough. Some of the fairways were a bit, let’s say, ‘characterful’. You had to pick your spots. But hey, that’s golf, isn’t it? If it was all perfect, where’s the fun in that? Honestly, for the price, I wasn’t complaining.
I played with a couple of older chaps who seemed to know every blade of grass on that course. They were good company, full of stories. That’s one thing I love about golf, you meet all sorts. We weren’t breaking any course records, just enjoying the walk and the odd decent shot. There was this one par 3, over a bit of water – nothing too scary, but it made you think. I managed to plonk mine on the green, which felt like a small victory for the day.
What really struck me about Fairmount was the vibe. It was just… relaxed. Nobody was rushing you, nobody was looking down their nose if you duffed one. It felt like a community spot, which is getting harder to find these days. I’ve been to places where you feel like you’re being judged on every swing. Not here. This was more like a Sunday afternoon kickabout in the park, but with golf clubs.
After the round, I grabbed a quick drink. The clubhouse is pretty basic, but it does the job. Had a chat with a few other players. Everyone seemed pretty content. No major dramas, just people enjoying a day out.

So, what’s the takeaway?
- It’s not a championship course, don’t go expecting Augusta.
- The conditions are perfectly playable, especially for the money.
- The atmosphere is super laid-back and friendly.
- It’s a great place if you just want to get out and swing the sticks without any pretense.
Would I go back? Yeah, I think I would. It’s not going to be my once-a-week-every-week kind of place, probably. But for a casual round, or if I just want to practice without feeling pressured, Fairmount is a solid option. It’s honest, you know? It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not, and I respect that. Sometimes, that’s all you really need from a golf course. Just a decent place to play a game. And Fairmount, well, it delivers that.
