Ay, let me tell ya, this whole golf thing, it ain’t as easy as it looks on the TV. My grandson, bless his heart, he’s trying to teach me. But all these clubs, they look the same to me! He keeps going on about somethin’ called “shaft flex.” Says it’s important. Important like knowin’ when to plant your taters, I reckon.

So, this shaft flex, what in the Sam Hill is it? Well, from what that young’un tells me, it’s how much the stick bends when you swing it. Like a willow branch in the wind, I suppose. You got your stiff ones, your bendy ones, and somethin’ in between. He says most folks use the “Regular Flex“.
Now, why should you care about this shaft flex, you ask? Well, apparently, it makes the ball go where you want it to. Like tryin’ to get that darn rooster back in the coop, you gotta use the right kinda shooing. If you got the wrong flex, that ball’s gonna fly off every which way.
- Too stiff, and it’s like tryin’ to bend a fence post.
- Too bendy, and it’s like whippin’ a wet noodle.
- Gotta get it just right.
My grandson, he says most folks, ’bout 80 out of every 100, they use that Regular Flex. That’s a whole heap of people! He says if you swing the club, not like you’re tryin’ to kill a snake, but, you know, regular-like, and that ball goes about 200-230 yards then Regular Flex is what you need. Yards, feet, it’s all the same to me. Just get it in the hole! This “shaft flex” thing is getting to be a headache.
He says if you’re startin’ out, or gettin’ better, this Regular Flex is the cat’s meow. I think I’d rather be chasing those darn cats than worrying about this. He said this about intermediate stage, whatever that means. But I heard that Regular Flex is good for it. So I think that it’s good for new guys.
Now, I seen some folks with those real stiff shafts. They swing like they’re choppin’ wood. My grandson, he says those are for the fellas who hit the ball a country mile. More power than a mule, those fellas.

And then there’s the bendy ones. They call ’em “Senior Flex” or somethin’. I reckon that’s for folks like me, whose bones ain’t as spry as they used to be. But I ain’t ready to admit that just yet! I still got a few good swings left in me, I think.
He says there are other options too. “Extra Stiff,” “Ladies Flex” – it’s enough to make your head spin! Like tryin’ to keep track of all them chickens in the yard. I can’t even remember all the types of the “shaft flex“.
But the gist of it is, you gotta find the right flex for you. It’s like findin’ the right pair of shoes. Too tight, and you’ll be miserable. Too loose, and you’ll trip over yourself. Gotta be just right, or you won’t be able to walk a lick. Same with golf, I reckon.
My grandson, he’s a good boy. He’s patient with me, even though I don’t understand half of what he’s sayin’. He keeps tellin’ me that shaft flex is good for my swing. He says if I use the right one, I’ll be hittin’ that ball straight as an arrow. Maybe even get it in that little hole someday.
But honestly, I think I’d rather be tendin’ my garden. At least them tomatoes don’t talk back. And I understand what they need. Water, sunshine, a little bit of love. That’s all it takes. This golf business, it’s a whole lot more complicated. I still don’t know what shaft flex should I use.

But I’ll keep tryin’. For my grandson’s sake. He gets so excited when he talks about it. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll figure it all out. Maybe one day I’ll even hit that little white ball where it’s supposed to go. Or maybe I’ll just stick to my garden. We’ll see.
One more thing he said about this whole shaft flex thing. It helps with your “swing mechanics”. Sounds like somethin’ a mechanic would work on, not a golfer. And it helps with “ball flight”. Like watchin’ a bird, I suppose. It’s all so confusing.
I asked him, “What if I just use any old club?” He said that’s like wearin’ shoes that don’t fit. You can do it, but it ain’t gonna be pretty. And you probably won’t get very far. So, I guess this shaft flex thing is more important than I thought.
I still think it’s a lot of fuss over nothin’. But if it makes my grandson happy, I’ll try to learn. After all, what else does an old lady like me have to do? Besides, maybe he’ll let me drive the golf cart. Now that’s somethin’ I think I could get the hang of. No shaft flex to worry about there!
