Yo, listen up, you young’uns! Gonna tell ya somethin’ ’bout this here basketball thing. See them fellas runnin’ around on that there court? They ain’t just runnin’ willy-nilly. Each one’s got a job, a position, ya see? It is important.

Now, there’s usually five of ’em on each side, makin’ ten total. And they each got their own special thing they do. Kinda like on a farm, you got your milk cow, your plow horse, your egg-laying hen. Everyone has a job on the court.
First off, you got what they call the “point guard”. Now, this fella, he’s like the boss of the ball, the leader. He’s the one dribblin’ that ball up the court, tellin’ everyone where to go, what to do. He should make good decisions. He’s gotta be quick, like a weasel, and smart, too. Gotta know the game inside and out, pass the ball good. Otherwise, the team can not win.
Then there’s the “shooting guard”. This one, well, he’s the one who likes to shoot that ball. He’s good at it, too. He can shoot from far away, close up, don’t matter. He’s like that rooster who just loves to crow. He needs to get the ball to the basket. That’s the point, ain’t it? Get the ball into the basket.
- Point Guard: Brings the ball up, starts the plays.
- Shooting Guard: Shoots the ball, scores points.
- Small Forward: Does a bit of everything, all-around player.
- Power Forward: Big and strong, grabs rebounds.
- Center: Usually the tallest, plays near the basket.
Next up is the “small forward”. He’s kinda like a mix of the other two. Can shoot, can dribble, can do a little bit of everything. He’s like a good farm dog, can herd the sheep, chase off the coyotes, whatever you need. A good player, that small forward.
Then you got your “power forward”. This fella, he’s a big one. Strong, like a bull. He’s the one who fights for the ball under the basket, what they call “reboundin’”. He’s tough, ain’t afraid to get in there and mix it up. He needs to be tough. Otherwise, he can not do the job. It’s like movin’ them big ol’ rocks outta the field. Takes some muscle.

And last but not least, you got the “center”. This is usually the tallest one on the team. He’s the one who stands near the basket, tryin’ to get easy shots. He’s also good at that reboundin’ thing, ’cause he’s so tall. He can just reach up and grab that ball. Like pickin’ apples from the highest branch. He needs to be tall.
Now, these five positions, they all work together. They gotta. It’s like a good stew, you need all the ingredients to make it taste right. You can’t just have all potatoes, or all carrots. You need a little bit of everything. If one player doesn’t do his job, the whole team will lose. That’s the way it works. Teamwork! That’s the key.
And you know, watchin’ these young fellas play, it kinda reminds me of back in the day. We used to have these barn dances, and everyone had a part to play. The fiddler, the caller, the dancers. Everyone workin’ together to make it a good time. Basketball’s kinda like that, in its own way.
These young folks, they practice all the time. They gotta learn how to dribble that ball real good, with both hands. Can’t be droppin’ it all the time. And shootin’! Lord, they practice that shootin’. Gotta have good form, gotta follow through. They shoot from far away, near the basket, all over. It’s hard work. I can’t even do that. These kids are so strong!
So, next time you watchin’ one of them basketball games, remember what I told ya. It ain’t just a bunch of fellas runnin’ around. It’s a team, workin’ together, each one with their own special job. And it’s a beautiful thing to watch, when they all workin’ together like that. They should know their basketball player position roles well, so they can be a good player.

Yep, just like a well-oiled machine, or a good ol’ stew. Everything in its place, workin’ together. That’s basketball for ya. That’s the basketball positions. And it is a good game, although I am too old to play. These young boys are good.
