Today I’m gonna show you guys how I messed around with this thing called Whelen Southern Modified. It’s some kind of racing thing, I guess. I don’t know much about cars, but I do know a thing or two about tinkering with stuff, so here’s how it went down.
First off, I had to figure out what I was even dealing with. I did some digging, and it turns out Whelen Southern Modified is like a regional version of NASCAR, those stock car races they have in the US. You got these modified cars, which are kinda like regular cars but with a bunch of souped-up parts.
Once I had a basic idea, I started poking around the internet for more details. I looked at some pictures of the cars, read some articles about the rules and regulations, and even watched a few races online. It’s actually pretty exciting, those cars go super fast!
After getting a feel for the whole scene, I decided to build a little model of one of these modified cars. I grabbed some cardboard, some old toy car parts, and whatever else I could find lying around the house. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a start!
- I cut out the basic shape of the car body from the cardboard.
- Then I used some glue and tape to stick it all together.
- I found some wheels from an old toy truck and attached those to the bottom.
- For the engine, I just used a small plastic bottle and some wires to make it look kinda realistic.
- Finally, I painted the whole thing with some leftover paint I had.
It took a few hours, and like I said, it wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was fun to build. I even made a little track out of some more cardboard and raced it around my living room. My cat was not amused, but hey, I had a good time.
Next, I wanted to take it up a notch. I downloaded a racing simulator game that lets you customize cars, and tried to recreate a Whelen Southern Modified car in the game. This was way easier than the cardboard version, since I could just pick and choose parts from the in-game menu.

I spent a good chunk of time tweaking the settings, trying to get the car to handle like what I’d seen in the videos. I messed with the suspension, the tires, the engine power, all that stuff. It was a lot of trial and error, but I eventually got it to a point where it felt pretty good to drive.
I took it for a spin on a virtual track that looked like one of the real-life Whelen Southern Modified tracks. Man, it was a blast! I was sliding around corners, bumping into other cars, and just having a great time. I even managed to win a few races, which was a nice little bonus.
The results
So that’s pretty much my Whelen Southern Modified adventure. I started with knowing absolutely nothing, did some research, built a janky little model, and ended up racing a virtual version of the car in a game. Not too bad for a few days of messing around, right?
It just goes to show, you don’t need to be an expert to have fun with something new. Just be curious, do a little digging, and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. You might be surprised at what you can come up with! If I do any more, I’ll write some more about it, but we’ll see!
