My little experiment with the ‘boston mavericks’ setup
So, someone mentioned ‘boston mavericks’ the other day, and it totally took me back to this little project I tried a while back. It wasn’t anything official, just a name I kinda gave to this setup I was messing with.

I got this idea while watching some basketball. You know how sometimes you follow players across different teams? Well, I got curious about comparing specific things, like hustle plays or certain types of shots, but for players on teams that rarely play each other directly, like guys in Boston versus guys in Dallas. Seemed simple enough in my head.
Okay, here’s how I started:
- First, I needed to actually watch the games, sometimes simultaneously if schedules lined up. I tried using my laptop and the TV. Then I messed around with picture-in-picture on my tablet. That was a bit fiddly, getting the streams synced up.
- Then, the tracking part. I thought, easy, I’ll just jot notes down. Grabbed a notebook and pen.
- After about half a game, my notes looked like chicken scratch. Players move fast, you know? Hard to watch two screens and write coherently.
- So, I thought, okay, maybe a simple spreadsheet? I opened one up, set up some basic columns: Player Name, Team, Play Type, Time.
- I spent a good hour just tweaking the columns, trying to figure out what was actually worth tracking without pausing the games every five seconds.
- Tried tracking during the next game. It was… tough. I kept missing plays while typing, or I’d get caught up in the game and forget to log anything.
What happened in the end?
Honestly, the whole ‘boston mavericks’ tracking thing didn’t last long. Maybe a couple of weeks? It was way more effort than I expected for just a casual curiosity. Keeping up with live games and manually logging stuff is intense!
It kinda reminded me of when I decided to digitize all my old family photos. I bought a scanner, got all excited, scanned about ten photos, realized how long it would take, and then just… put the photos back in the box. Sometimes the setup and the process are more interesting than the final result, or you realize the result wasn’t worth the hassle.

So yeah, the ‘boston mavericks’ project. It was a thing I did. Didn’t revolutionize my basketball watching, but it was a fun little experiment to try and set up. Mostly just proved I’m better off just enjoying the games.
