Well, let me tell you, this William Hooper, he’s a football fella. Plays for the NFL, they say. Plays for that Atlanta Falcons team, I reckon. Big strong boy, that one. Runs fast, jumps high, all that stuff they do in football. You know, that sport with the funny-shaped ball. I seen it on the TV sometimes. Lots of running and tackling. My grandson, he loves it. Always yellin’ at the screen.
They say this William Hooper, he’s a cornerback. Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds important. Probably means he’s good at catchin’ that ball, or maybe stoppin’ the other fellas from catchin’ it. It’s all a bit of a blur to me, all that runnin’ around. But folks seem to think he’s pretty good at it, this Hooper boy. Seen his name in them online things a lot recently. William Hooper NFL, that’s what they type.
He’s from somewhere, that’s for sure. Everybody’s from somewhere. Think I saw it somewhere, he went to some fancy college. You know, one of them places where they learn all sorts of things. Not just how to plant corn or milk a cow, like we used to. They learn all them fancy words and numbers. Guess he learned how to play football real good there, too.

And they got all these fancy words for what he does, too. Tacklin’, they call it. And interceptin’. And other things I can’t rightly recall. Sounds mighty complicated. But he must be good at it, ’cause they keep puttin’ him in the game. Must be worth a pretty penny, playing NFL like that. More than I ever made sellin’ eggs, that’s for sure.
This William Hooper, he’s got folks talkin’. They say he’s got a bright future. Whatever that means. Guess it means he’ll keep playin’ football for a long time. And makin’ lots of money doin’ it. Good for him, I say. Long as he stays healthy, knock on wood. Football’s a rough game. Lots of bangin’ and crashin’.
Seen some pictures of him, too. He’s a big lad, all right. Got them big shoulder pads and that helmet. Looks like he could run through a brick wall. Wouldn’t want to get in his way, that’s for sure. Not that I’d be runnin’ around on a football field anyway. My old bones ain’t what they used to be. I just saw the news from website, keep talking about William Hooper stats, you know.

Anyway, this William Hooper, he seems like a good boy. Workin’ hard, doin’ what he loves. Can’t fault him for that. Hope he does well for himself. And maybe one day, he’ll come back to his hometown, wherever that is, and build a nice big house for his mama. That’s what I’d do if I was a big-shot football player like him. Yep, that William Hooper NFL career seems like a good thing. He is a good boy I think.
They said that Atlanta Falcons got their name from a schoolteacher, how about that? That was a long time ago, though. Back in 1965. That’s even before my time! Time sure does fly, don’t it? That’s what all these William Hooper things are about.
